As Artists, we have the ability to understand the many faces within ourselves and others.

#86 – The Logical Mind would prefer us to be one-dimensional, but the Artist Mind embraces each and every one of our multiple facets.

Our Artist Mind allows us to be many things. We are sometimes different things to different people at various stages of our lives: confident with moments of doubt, intensely focused yet often scattered, strong but sometimes vulnerable. We are constantly shifting, changing. Recognizing ourselves in this way allows us to also recognize others.

Lisa Bauer’s work is a reminder of the cast of characters that resides within each of us, as I recognized bits and pieces of myself, and others, in many of her portraits.

“My pieces are short narratives of my life,” said Bauer. “The purpose of this body of work is to have more of a diary of the events happening throughout the world and also within myself.”

“I use my practice to convey my ideas and point of view of events both personal and public, current issues from different moments in time,” the artist explained.

“I struggle with my identity and understanding my role in society, and these issues evoke the need for me to create work.”

“My identity has always created a disconnect within the way I see the world,” she continued. “My ethnic background is more complex than many in some cases, it creates more tension to be more of an outsider than I really am. The illusions of how people identify me vary. The challenges I face are similar to those of a 7-year-old most days.”

Lisa Bauer creates extraordinary paintings from all these contradictions because the Artist Mind thrives on change and multiplicity. She understands many faces.

For me, I’ve found that this multiplicity can be a deep well of inspiration, and no matter who I am at any given moment, or who people think I am, I’m always an Artist, and that’s what always grounds me.
