#43 – Artists excel at brainstorming.
It takes the right questions to coax brilliant ideas out into the open. In conversations with my brother, we often find ourselves saying, “Wouldn’t it be cool if.…” when discussing our latest ideas. It’s our way of completely opening up to the infinite myriad of possibilities, even the silly ones or the seemingly impossible ones, before the Logical Brain has a chance to shut them down. It’s almost childlike in its simplicity, but unbelievably powerful as a tool for effective brainstorming.
As I mentioned in my post on Abundance, when my mind is presented with a creative project I never get just one idea. As a matter of fact, my mind will spark with so many ideas, I have to get them out of my head. In a group setting, however, creative brainstorming can feel overwhelming to others. “Too many ideas!” “We can’t possibly do all of them!” The point is NOT to seriously consider all of them, but to let them all out without judgment. There will always be at least one that is just right.
“Wouldn’t it be cool if….” is an instantaneous way to tap into the Artist Mind and it always delivers the extraordinary.
“The ultimate solutions to problems are rational; the process of finding them is not.”
J. P. Guilford
“When I’m riding in a car, I don’t really listen to music. I turn the radio off and just be thinking, brainstorming. I’m one of these people that just like to brainstorm.”
— Chamillionaire
“Night-time is when I brainstorm; last thing, when the family’s asleep and I’m alone, I think about the next day’s writing and plan a strategy for my assault on the blank page.”
Athol Fugard
“It is easier to tone down a wild idea than to think up a new one.”
Alex Faickney Osborn
“If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.”
Albert Einstein
