Growing a Christmas Tree: A Close Call and….Success!

Five Christmas Trees sprouting from seeds.
All five Christmas Trees sprouted!

All five of my Christmas tree seeds have sprouted! Woo hoo!!

At our 2025 Thanksgiving dinner, my cousin Jaimie gave each of us cousins kits to grow our own Christmas trees. We have been sharing our progress in a group chat and then will bring them to Christmas dinner where they will be judged on who grew the best tree. (No news yet on the criteria of the judging or the prize to be awarded.)

Here are some of the posts from our chat:

NOVEMBER 28

Jan
Plant your trees! Soak those seeds first!

Serena
Soaked my seeds last night. Planted them this morning.

Jan
I told Jaimie you’d be the first one!!

Anne
I put mine in the freezer overnight. I’ll plant them this afternoon.

NOVEMBER 29

Jym
Game on!

Jaim
I planted mine this morning as well!

DECEMBER 7

Serena
Woo hoo! My Christmas Tree seeds are up! Three out of 5 seeds so far…

Anne
I have one popping up but still covered in soil.

Bonn
You are all making me feel like I need to up my game LOL!

Serena
Two more seeds came up! I got all 5!

Bonn
Nothing for me yet….

Jan
Me either. Although it looks like one maybe.

Serena
I put mine on the heater until they started to sprout. Then I’ve been placing them in the window to get sunlight during the day. Plus I talk to them.

Anne
Sing to them! Plants love classical music.

DECEMBER 10

Anne
I have a story that is new for me….In all the years I’ve been planting vegetables and flowers, I have never actually seen a seed sprout out of the soil I picked up my pot tonight to move it to a warmer place for the night. I looked carefully and saw just the one plant that had come out, but right before my very eyes I saw something else move and pop up. A second plant came out right as I was watching – made my day!

Bonn

I finally got a sprout showing!

DECEMBER 15

Bonn
I have 3 others poking through!

Jym
I have a forest growing…8 sprouts

DECEMBER 17

Jym
9 !!!

Anne
You must’ve gone out and bought more seeds, you’re not fooling me!

Jan
I’m not telling anyone about mine.

Jaim
Did you even plant yours yet?

Jan
Not telling.

DECEMBER 18

Jym
12!!

Anne
I have 4.

Jaim
I have 6 but I think 2 are not going to survive.

DECEMBER 19

Jym

13 sprouts now. Looks more like a new lawn instead of trees. LOL!

So we’re all well on our way with our little trees. I had a close call as Villie knocked the pot on the floor right after I had planted my seeds. Luckily they still all came up and Villie got to keep all of his 9 lives.

As the seeds started to sprout I began thinking about what I was going to do with all of these trees. Of course I’ll keep one, but I thought it would be cool to offer the rest as Christmas gifts. So I separated them into individual pots, which is better for them anyway as they would soon become crowded as they grew.

All transplanted!

Unfortunately, two of them didn’t survive the transplanting.

I gave away the other two as gifts and kept one for me. I named it Kris. As in Kris Kringle.

It’s growing fast now, but will probably not be sporting any ornaments by Christmas.
