Creating art often has little to do with the final product. Process is everything to an artist.
#18 – For most artists, the act of creating is more rewarding than “having created.”
I create to satisfy the hunger in my Artist Mind. The creative process is what gets me into the studio; my brain literally sparks with ideas and possibilities and “what ifs” as I’m working. It’s an exploration, pushing boundaries, solving problems. It is sometimes a battle, but there’s always a reward.
The creative process is more important to me than the end result because creating a “product” means you’ve already figured it out. Once a piece is finished – and no art is ever really finished (see Day 11) – I do not spend an inordinate amount of time appreciating the final work of art. It has served its purpose for me. My brain has already moved on to the next project.
It really doesn’t matter what I do, it matters that I continue doing it. The process is where discovery takes place.
