#12 – Art is Serious Work. And Play.
Regardless of how much it looks like play, when I’m in my studio, I’m seriously working. No one ever believes that because it’s an act that’s focused on process rather than product which is difficult to quantify in capitalistic terms. It also requires an almost childish curiosity to approach the world with a creative mind and to push the boundaries of one’s materials and talent.
This does not mean that it all comes easily. It takes years to research and develop and hone the techniques that go into a great work of art. An artistic practice is like any other practice: you perfect your talent a bit every day and even after many years, you are always learning something new.
Even after 20 years, when I’m in my studio I’m still a kid in ripped jeans and a t-shirt. Seriously working.
