It is tempting to share a wild and juicy idea before it has a chance to take root. Placing a brand-new vision in a box and presenting it too soon can take the life out of it.
#9 – Ideas need time to develop before they are ready for the world.
I rarely discuss new ideas right away. I acknowledge them and give them room. Sharing them too soon sets them up for rejection. This is especially true if I present a fledgling idea to an audience grounded in structure and rules. They often cannot imagine the vision as I see it. They want facts and figures and proof.
A new idea is a starting point; it arrives as a hint and expands as I work on it. Once I pull it down into the real world, it shifts and changes and the result can be quite different from what I had envisioned. Thankfully, it’s often much better. So I’ve learned to sit with an idea before even verbalizing it so it can become what it’s meant to be.
